KNOW YOUR SERUMS

Updated: Apr 18, 2021

A serum is a skincare powerhouse, it can be an oil or water-based product that consists of strong active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides, glycerin, vitamin E, and C that boosts our skin with anti-oxidant properties, repairs the skin, and improves collagen production.

A serum is used after cleansing and before applying moisturiser, to make sure those strong active ingredients absorb into the skin and gives the skin the plump and youthful glow it needs. To ensure these are the results you get from your serum, it is best to opt for a water-based serum over an oil-based one, for it is thin and contains small molecules. Serums are not to be mistaken as moisturisers and cannot be replaced by one, a serum is far more vigorous than a moisturiser for the reason that it can directly tackle skin problems as it penetrates the skin effortlessly because of its water-based consistency, moisturisers so as some oil-based serums (depending on the consistency) tend to have thick ingredients and larger molecules causing them to be unable to penetrate the skin. The skin consists of three layers, the epidermis - top layer, the dermis – second layer, and the hypodermis – third layer, a moisturiser cannot penetrate beyond the epidermis layer of the skin but is great for locking the active ingredients in the skin, this is why serums should be applied before moisturising.

Our skin responds differently to different products and we have different skin concerns, and with so many products to choose from in the market - it can be confusing so it’s important to understand the concern of your skin when purchasing any product, don’t purchase 'hype', purchase by concern and ingredient – sadly some brands have turned marketing and advertising into mediocre these days, don’t trust EVERYTHING influencers promote, most of them do it just because they are getting paid and because they have an x amount of followers, not because they actually believe and understand the product.

There are different types of serums, know your concern otherwise it’s a waste of money because serums can be quite pricey –but you can be sure to get the most out of it if you choose it for the right reasons, as they hit your skin concerns on the nail without having to use too much, a pump or two is sufficient each time you apply it, as pricey as they can get, they are actually cost-effective because they last a whole while without the quality being compromised.

TYPES OF SERUMS

Hydrating Serums – These are great for dry skin as hydrating serums easily penetrate the skin because of their consistency leaving the skin hydrated and healthy.

Correcting serums, Dark Spots - Vitamin C plays a major role in clearing the skin as it is a strong antioxidant and prevents free radicals from damaging the skin.

Skin Brightening Serums – Vitamin E and C is a great antioxidant for eliminating hyper-pigmentation, evening out, and brightening the skin.

Acne Serums – Unlike a typical face wash that is thick and only removes dirt on the surface level, serums are thinner and can fight acne beyond the epidermis level of the skin and prevents acne breakouts altogether.

Exfoliating Serums – Helps remove dead skin cells, smooths out the skin, and assists in producing collagen, resulting in clearer and brighter skin.

Serums are definitely a must-have in a skincare routine, if you don’t already have one, make sure to get one according to your specific concern and preferably a vegan and cruelty-free one, why? find out on our previous blog – BENEFITS OF USING VEGAN AND CRUELTY-FREE PRODUCTS. Invest in your skin and ensure it gets the nutrients that it needs, because when we look good, we feel good.
